  • The Maine State Society Remembers...

Gone is the face we loved so dear, silent the voice we loved to hear; too far away for sight or speech,
but not too far for thought to reach. Sweet to think of the one who was here who is gone away, is just as dear.

Honorary Senior State President Constance "Connee" Jellison

    From the Senior State President:

It is with sadness that I pass along news that Honorary Senior State President Constance "Connee" Jellison passed away June 13, 2012. Connee was Senior State President of Maine from 1994 until 1998. During her term, she led a group of 20 Maine members and seniors aboard a charter bus to attend the Centennial celebration of the National Society in Washington. Other activities included the commissioning of the U.S.S. Maine, and donations to the Child Life Project at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine State Game Farm in Gray, and the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. Connee was also the one who drew the ink drawing of the ship seen on the banner of The Maine Sheet state newsletter. Over the years, she also hosted many meetings at her home and on MDI.

Connee was passionate about and dedicated to both DAR and C.A.R. and was a truly wonderful person and leader. She will certainly be missed.

Honorary Senior State President Rebecca Johnson

From the Senior State President: It is with sorrow that the Maine State Society notes the passing of Honorary Senior State President Rebecca (Mrs. Wayne) Johnson (1979-1983). Becca passed away on September 27, 2012. She was a longtime friend and supporter of Maine C.A.R. having also served multiple terms as Senior Society President of William Fairfield Society and was the current Senior Society Treasurer. As Senior State President, she made great efforts to increase membership in Maine, including work to organize a new local society. She, along with her daughters who all served as State Presidents, helped organize wonderful State Fun Days, and it was during Becca's tenure that the State Society helped raise money for a new canopy for the canopy bed at the Burnham Tavern in Machias, beneficiary of the current State President's project.  Becca was an amazing woman, leader and friend and she will be truly missed.

Honorary Senior State President Ronald E. Newton

From the Senior State President: It is with sorrow that the Maine State Society notes the passing of Honorary Senior State President Ronald E. Newton (2006-2010). Ron passed away on April 12, 2013 after a battle with cancer. He was a long and ardent supporter of C.A.R. in Maine, New England, and National, and was the first male to serve as Senior State President of Maine. During his term, membership grew in Maine, the State Bylaws were updated, members donated books to libraries, raised money for a veteran’s memorial park, sent encouragement to members of the military, and planted Liberty trees. Ron was dedicated to his work both with C.A.R. and in his community and was always very generous with his support -- both physically and financially. He was also instrumental in completing the research and application papers for countless members. He was a good friend who will truly be missed.
